Starry Night

€1,200.00

The collection of Philistine DNA, is inspired by ancient Philistine pottery found in Aqroon or Ekron, north of Gaza. The pottery dates from 9-8th century BCE. Aqroon was one of the Philistine Pentapolis cities. Gaza City was also part of the Pentapolis.

The Philistines and the Philistine culture coined the name Palestine, which has been used referring to the land, for 4000 continues years.

The Philistine DNA series combines the ancient Philistine jar shapes, the way of making the jars, with contemporary elements of destruction. “Starry Nights” is a little jar with an ancient shape and style now with the design of war ships under the million-year-old stars that have been shining on Gaza and its sea.

The ancient jars were produced by coiling methods, and decorated with nature motifs and patterns like birds, fish and flowers observed in their surroundings using earthen colors slip (which is diluted clay with different mineral colors like Iron and Ash) and fired in wood pits for many hours.

I threw my pots by wheel, and decorated them itching into earthen color slips that I collected from different clay bodies, with Un-natural motifs witnessed from my surroundings together with the whole world live on our social media since October last year - connecting my past with the present.

They are fired 3 times, bisque firing at 900 degrees, glaze firing at 1200 degrees, and a gold luster fire at 800 degrees.
